Introduction to the Simvastatin – Zocor

Merck’s most renowned brand Zocor is formulated by using the active generic ingredient Simvastatin. It is the first drug preparation indicated for diminishing the total death rate through decreasing bad cholesterol–LDL absorptions and triglycerides and simultaneously increase the good cholesterol levels HDL in the blood of the patients suffering from the coronary heart disease.


The U.S. FDA approved Zocor on 23rd December 1991, which is being produced and made available for intending patients to buy, purchase or order in the US, UK, Canada or Australia, in the tablet form in different dose strengths of 5 /10 /20/ 40 and 80mg. Zocor is prescribed for children having hereditary condition called heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia-HGFH which is responsible of developing high cholesterol at the younger age. When taken in combination with diet, statins decrease total cholesterol, LDL and apo B levels in children with HGFH. Statins may be tried for treating children following the sufficient trial of diet treatment, if any of the following results is noticed: LDL-C is greater than or equals to 190 mg/dL; LDL-C maintains greater than or equal to 160 mg/dL; and one of the following is present: the positive family history of premature cardiovascular ailment or two or more cardiovascular ailment risk factors in the child patient.
